The challenge
John Smedley is one of the UK's leading clothing manufacturers,
and from their base in the beautiful countryside of Matlock, Derbyshire
they provide a boost to Britain's export trade, shipping their goods
worldwide.
With several remote sites, including a prestigious showroom in
London, John Smedley's IT manager John Irving wanted to reduce inter-site
communications costs by sending their telephone calls over their
data network.
Having requested information from several vendors, it soon became
apparent that most of them were only interested in supplying a completely
new telephone system, with expensive IP phones and a new IP PBX.
John Smedley had a perfectly good telephone system, which provided
high levels of functionality and good quality voice - the last thing
Smedley's wanted was major capital investment in a new PBX system.
John Smedley had been using Case Communications equipment in their
network for a number of years and had found it to be reliable and
robust. John Irving decided to call Case Communications to determine
whether they could help.
The solution
John Smedley had been using Case Communications equipment in their
network for a number of years and had found it to be reliable and
robust. John Irving decided to call Case Communications to determine
whether they could help.
The Case Communications Viper, Voice Over IP Router provided the
answer, to John's requirements. The Viper is installed in front
of an existing PBX and then encapsulates the voice from the PBX
into IP, (or frame relay) for transmission over the network, before
placing it back into traditional PBX format, such as primary rate
ISDN, FXO/FXS, basic rate ISDN, or E&M, AC15, etc.
The Viper is able to handle a wide variety of PBX physical interfaces
and most of the common signalling systems, allowing the full range
of PBX facilities to remain in place. What's more the Viper has
exceptionally high quality voice with very efficient compression
techniques.
The entire system was installed within a day and no changes to
any of the telephone or PBX systems were required. The new Case
Communications voice over IP network allows John Smedley to take
advantage of voice over IP without a major investment or any degradation
to the quality of their calls.
The benefits
The key benefits John Smedley gained from the Case Communications
voice over IP solution were:
- Advantages of VoIP without major investment
- High quality voice
- Full PBX facilities kept
- Ability to handle most PBX interfaces
- Ability to support most PBX signalling systems
- Wire speed routing between sites
