Introduction to Case Communications IP-BVN

The popular concept of Broadband and the Internet is of a home user surfing the Internet. Increasingly businesses are finding they can use the Internet in place of expensive dedicated digital circuits, and make considerable cost savings.

However, business users needs are different to those of the 'home user'. To run mission critical applications like Voice Over IP, PBX-to-PBX transfer, circuit emulation and high-speed transfers between corporate offices, requires a broadband service with no or low contention ratios, guaranteed 'quality of service' and high levels of service, and we call this 'Business Broadband'

Case Communications is able to provide very high quality 'Business Broadband' services to organisations. They achieve this in the following ways

Virtual Private Network – Our Business Broadband network offers an alternative to traditional multi-site solutions based on leased lines, Frame Relay, ATM or other types of IP based Virtual Private Networks like IP Sec and MPLS.

Our IP-VPN is...

Business class Designed to fulfill business class requirements when connecting multiple sites for flexibility, performance, cost and reliability.
Secure Delivering a secure communications medium using standards-based authentication methods with no traffic being sent over the Internet.
Quality of Service Provides a network that is QoS aware in order to support business critical services such as Voice over IP, Circuit emulation or e-commerce applications.
Cost-effective Use of a Business Broadband service is extremely cost effective.

Delivering High Speed Access

Business class broadband is our primary delivery method for "last mile", although traditional connection methods such as leased lines are supported. Using Local Loop Unbundling (LLU), or WiMax we can provide access data rates from 10Mbps to 150Mbps

At no point is traffic sent over the Internet.

Inter-site Connectivity

Inter-site connectivity is supported centrally by high-availability carrier class multi-service routers, which can securely support thousands of subscribers. These routers provide:

  • Authentication
  • Authorisation
  • IP Router (Static routes, RIP 1, RIP 2 OSPF, ISIS and BGP)
  • Access list control
  • Traffic marking and scheduling

Service Level Guarantee

The Case Communications business broadband network supports the following options:

Datastream Exchange Circuit – Standard Care

Cover against fault during weekday business hours (excluding public and bank holidays) with a five hour response time

Datastream Exchange Circuit – Enhanced Care

Enhanced Care offers a 21-clock hour clear and a 3-hour response time. Out of hours engineering visits to site may be used to complete a repair is unrestricted access is available.

LLU Exchange Circuit – Standard Care

Cover against faults during weekday business hours (excluding public and bank holidays), with a five-hour response time.

LLU Exchange Circuit – Total Care

Cover against faults 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with a 4-hour response time

Please contact Case Communications in order to identify the exchange type applicable to your circuit.

Support times On Unbundled Local Loop Exchanges

Our network infrastructure within their data centre and LLU exchanges are covered by a 1-hour response time during business hours (excluding public and bank holidays) and a 2-hour response time at all other times.

NB. Please note we can offer a bespoke service level agreement; please contact Case Communications to discuss your requirements.

IP-BVN vs Virtual Private Networks

Our IP-VPN brings many of the benefits of other Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) available today without the costs or restrictions that they carry.

IPSec VPNs

IP Security (IPSec) VPNs are widely used on the Internet to securely provide site-to-site or site-to client networks over the public Internet, they have the following advantages and disadvantages:

Advantages
  • Availability
  • Ease of deployment
  • Low cost
Disadvantages
  • Use of the public internet
  • Unpredictable performance
  • Not QoS aware
  • Unsuitable for interactive or time critical applications

Many IPSec VPNs are contended (50:1 standard / 20:1 business). Asymmetric Digital Subscribers Line (ADSL), which along with limited upstream capacity of 256Kbps, makes it unsuitable for many business class requirements.

IP-BVN Supporting Quality of Service

Traffic management mechanisms can be implemented on the subscribers routers (with appropriate feature support) to provide quality of service, giving the necessary support guarantees for mission critical e-commerce applications, and time sensitive traffic such as voice over IP, e-commerce or circuit emulation.

Why choose a Case Communications IP-BVN?

Our IP-BVN provides all the best features of other multi-site solutions at a fraction the cost. Our wide range of products and technologies guarantee support for any application.

How many sites are supported?

There are no restrictions to the number of sites that can be supported.

What are the connectivity options?

Our preferred connectivity option, and most cost effective is Broadband using Asymmetric DSL (ADSL) or Symmetric G.SHDSLbis (Up to 22.8Mbps SHDSL).

Leased Lines and LAN Extension Services are also supported and these can go to 1Gbps.

ADSL can support connection speeds from 512Kbps downstream and 256Kbps upstream through to 8Mbps downstream to 800Kbps upstream.
SDSL can support symmetric connection speeds in each direction from 192Kbps to 22.8Mbps. (NB. Services may not be available in all areas - please consult with Case Communications for availability.)

ADSL and SDSL can be supplied as a contended or uncontended service. The uncontended service provides the equivalent of a leased line. Leased lines and LES circuits can support connection speeds of 64Kbps to 1Gbps.

Where is it available?

Case Communications 'Business Broadband' service is available anywhere in the UK, ideally the site would be on an ADSL or SDSL enabled exchange, although Case Communications have the ability to unbundle an exchange where the number of connections make it worthwhile, typically this can be as few as 4 or 5 sites.

The Added Benefits

There are a number of other benefits to Case Communications IP-BVN that our customers may wish to consider.

Centralised Services

As all customers' traffic is delivered through our data centre there are a number of benefits to be gained by locating central customers resources there. A dedicated Virtual LAN can be enabled in our data centre providing secure Ethernet connectivity between the data centre and the customer IP-BVN. Centrally locating this resource could remove the need for the customer to have a 'hub' site, which would otherwise require a large WAN link. Our Data Centre has the appropriate environment removing the need for customers to provision this at their own site.

Centralised Internet Access

Supported through a Virtual LAN in our data centre, all IP-BVN connected sites can be provided with centralised Internet Access on our Internet backbone. This removes the need for disparately managed Internet Access points on each customer site, Website could also be centrally deployed on a DMZ elevating the need for web traffic to transverse customers Wan Links.

IPSec VPN

Supported through a centralised firewall or VPN at the data centre, remote tele-workers can have secure access to the corporate network.

QoS Enabled Networking

Having a QoS enabled network opens up the opportunity to deliver voice and video over IP traffic between customer sites.

Managed Services

From our data centre we can provide a fully managed and bespoke service
