The Case Communications  PIGE-8T-2S-G is a managed Industrial 10 Gigabit Port PoE + Switch with 8 x 10/100/1000Mbps PoE / PoE+  Ports which support IEEE 802.3af/at providing up to 30 watts per port and 2 x 100 / 1000 SFP Ports

As a PoE device the PIGE-8T-2S-G can automatically detect and identify any equipment that meets the PoE standards and supplies power to that device

The PIGE-8T-2S-G supports a variety of redundancy protocols such as STP / RSTP / MSTP as well as G.8032 *ERPS) allowing communications to be recovered quickly in the even of a network failure ensuring uninterrupted communications for mission critical applications.

The PIGE-8T-2S-G is managed via a Web Interface CLI or SNMP Management System such as CaseView.

PIGE 8T 2S G – Managed Industrial 10 Gigabit Port PoE+ Ethernet Switch Ring Technology

The PIGE-8T-2S-G uses standard Spanning Tree, Rapid Spanning Tree and Multiple Spanning Tree for network resilience in addition it can also use G.8032 Enhanced Ring Protection Protocol to provide self healing in under 50ms and support upto 255 rings.

Ethernet Ring Protection Switching, (or ERPS),  has been devised by ITU-T under G.8032 Recommendation to provide sub-50ms protection and recovery switching for Ethernet traffic in a ring topology

Because previous ring protocols could very occasionally be subject to Ethernet crashes when the switch acting as the ‘Ring Master’ switch would close its management break when there was no break in the ring, and so caused an Ethernet loop and the ring to crash.

There are two versions of G8032

G.8032v1

In ERPS there is a central node called RPL Owner Node which blocks one of the ports to ensure that there is no loop formed for the Ethernet traffic. The link blocked by the RPL owner node is called the Ring Protection Link or RPL. The node at the other end of the RPL is known as RPL Neighbor Node. It uses R-APS control messages to coordinate the activities of switching on/off the RPL link.

Any failure along the ring triggers a R-APS(SF) (R-APS signal fail) message along both directions from the nodes adjacent to the failed link after these nodes have blocked the port facing the failed link. On obtaining this message, RPL owner unblocks the RPL port. (Note that a single link failure anywhere in the ring ensures a loop free topology.)

During the recovery phase when the failed link gets restored the nodes adjacent to the restored link send R-APS(NR) (R-APS no request) messages. On obtaining this message, the RPL owner block the RPL port and then sends a R-APS(NR,RB) (R-APS no request, RPL blocked) message. This will cause all other nodes other than RPL owner in the ring to unblock all the blocked ports.

This protocol is robust enough to work for unidirectional failure and multiple link failure scenarios in a ring topology. It includes a mechanism to force switch (FS) or manual switch (MS) which is used in field maintenance scenarios.

Version 2 of G.8032 introduced many additional features, such as:

  • Multi-ring/ladder network support
  • Revertive/ Non-revertive mode after the condition that is causing the switch has been cleared
  • Administrative commands: Forced Switch (FS), Manual Switch (MS) for blocking a particular ring port
  • Flush FDB (Filtering database) Logic, which significantly reduces amount of flush FDB operations in the ring
  • Support of multiple ERP instances on a single ring

The Case Communications PIGE-8T-2S-G  supports layer 2 to layer 4 packet filtering. It can match the first 80 bytes of a message, and also has filtering based on the source MAC Address, destination MAC Address, source IP Address, destination IP Address, IP Protocol type, TCP / UDP Port, TCP / UDP Port VLAN and other definitions.

Diagnostics

The Case Communications PIGE 8T-2S-G records events in its system log and it also has the following diagnostic tests

Ping Tests  
IP Address The destination IP Address that the ping will be sent to
Ping Length The payload size of the Ping, a number between 1 and 1452 with a default of 56
Ping Count The number of times that the switch will send the Ping
Ping Interval The time between sending each Ping

Cable Diagnostics

The PIGE 8T 2S-G cable diagnostics perform tests on the  10/100/1000Base-T copper cables. Because the diagnostic has the ability to identify the cable length and operating conditions it can isolate a variety of common faults, that can occur on twisted pair cable.
